Great Ohio River Paddle An Educational and Recreational Event

The Inaugural Great Ohio River Paddle will be held Saturday, September 20 to Saturday, September 27, 2003. The eight day event will begin in Portsmouth, Ohio and end in Rising Sun, Indiana. The Great Ohio River Paddle is being produced by Ohio River Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and restore the water quality and ecology of the Ohio River and its tributaries for the health and enjoyment of present and future generations.
The Great Ohio River Paddle is a multi-day paddling event to: · Educate schoolchildren and the general public about Ohio River ecology · Promote the importance of conserving and protecting the Ohio River · Celebrate the river and heritage of riverside communities.
Up to 40 experienced paddlers will travel 140 miles from Portsmouth, Ohio to Rising Sun, Indiana in 8 days. Along the way there will be a variety of activities for schoolchildren and the general public at the host communities.
Proceeds from the Great Ohio River Paddle will benefit the River Explorer Program (www.ohioriverfdn.org/explorer) of Ohio River Foundation (ORF). The purpose of the River Explorer program is to educate schoolchildren and the general public about the ecology and importance of the Ohio River. The primary feature of this program will be a 60-foot boat that will take people out on the river and provide a hands-on learning experience. Communities, universities, and other educational institutions are extremely excited about being involved in the program.

The Great Ohio River Paddle has something for everyone. For skilled paddlers it's a chance to paddle approximately 140 miles from Portsmouth, OH to Rising Sun, IN. For those who want to celebrate and learn more about the Ohio River and its communities from the shore, it offers a series of eventsshowcasing local cultural demonstrations, kayaking skills, information booths, and natural resource programs.
