 Pink Canoe Takes 2nd Place

The Pendleton County Women’s Cancer Coalition entered the Pink Canoe in the Annual Home Coming Parade. The parade stretched over 1 mile with dozens of floats. The Pink Canoe took 2nd Place. The Pink Canoe is now sponsored by the Women’s Cancer Coalition and will be the flag ship of this year’s Paddlefest 2007 on the Ohio River July 7. For more information on Paddlefest visit www.ohioriverway.org.

Ohio River Way ‘Paddlefest’ to Feature Pink Canoe to Promote Breast Cancer Awareness

The Ohio River Way will host its sixth annual “Paddlefest” on the Ohio River July 6 and 7, 2007. Thaxton’s South Fork Canoe Trails, in cooperation with Paddlesports International, will donate their 28 foot Voyager Canoe which they painted pink. It can hold up to 16  cancer survivors and patients who will journey 6 miles down the Ohio River on July 7, 2007. With the addition of two more voyaguer canoes donated by Ed Council of Canoe Kentucky will allow 30 more cancer survivors.                                                                                                                                                   This is the sixth consecutive year for this event that draws nearly 2000 paddlers from across the nation for a six mile float down the Ohio River and ends at the Serpentine Wall.

The mission of the paddlers and sponsors of the Pink Canoe is to promote cancer awareness to men and  women active in outdoor recreation, to stress the importance of early detection through mammograms and other dianostic tests, to show the value of exercise as an important aspect of healing, and to provide support to all cancer survivors and patients, as well as their families and friends, in each patient’s journey with cancer.

Since last year’s Paddlefest the Pink Canoe has traveled to Relay for Life events across the nation and to other major paddling events including the Quiet Water Syposium in Lansing, Michigan and Canoecopia in Madison, Wisconsin.

You may register online at www.ohioriverway.org Though space in the Voyaguer canooes is limited and will be made available on a first come first served basis, you may also rent canoes and kayaks or bring your own. Plan on camping with us at Four Season’s on Friday night, too.
