Winding through dense groves of buttressed bald cypress and lined by wide expanses of water lilies, the gentle Pocomoke River, near Maryland’s Atlantic coast, offers the finest flatwater paddling in the region. Birding is great in this stopover for the spring warbler migration and for waterfowl throughout the year. Sportfishermen flock to the Pocomoke for bass, perch, pickerel and the river’s signature fish, the alligator gar. The dark and mysterious river’s forested banks are pristine, almost primeval.
