A Paddle through the Everglades, by Outdoor Writer, Johnny Molloy Everglades National Park … we couldn’t believe we were there! After paying our customary entrance fee, plus a small fee for the canoe atop our car, Cisco and I sped westward along Main Park Road, mesmerized by the river of grass along both sides of the asphalt. Sure, we knew the Everglades could be paddled, but we hadn’t seen anything, so far, where you could stroke a blade. Finally, salty scent wafted into the car -- the ocean was near. The Flamingo complex, a marina, lodge, ranger station and campground, was surprisingly large. : http://www.gopaddle.com/html/newsletter/vol1issue2/everglades.html
Selecting a Boat to paddle, by Michael Lampman, Boatwright There is an axiom: “The pleasure one gets from a boat is inversely proportional to its size”. After years of devoting more time and money to maintaining boats than to using them, this simple truth became self-evident to me. Canoes and touring kayaks are versatile, small, simple and easy to haul around. They require far less maintenance than other boats and can usually be stored without taking up space that might be devoted to other purposes. I use my kayaks and canoes far more often than any of the the other boats I have owned over the years.
In selecting paddlecraft, it is important to keep such matters in mind because there are many models on the market that defeat these advantages. Many are just too heavy. http://www.gopaddle.com/html/newsletter/vol1issue2/Selecting_a_Boat.html
Paddling With Granny Annie, by Jim Thaxton, Storyteller I don’t recall the first time I met Ann Dwyer aka Granny Annie. In some strange way it seems that we have known each other all our lives in the way a brother knows his sister or the friendly neighbor on the street where you grew up. More likely we met at one of the paddlesports annual conferences in the early 80’s. In those days the trade organization was called the National Association of Canoe Liveries and Outfitters (NACLO). The name reflected what we did. We rented canoes. Most of us knew little about kayaks and those of us that did saw little opportunity in renting them to the public. http://www.gopaddle.com/html/newsletter/vol1issue2/granny_annie.html
